Publikacja jest pionierską pracą naukową z pogranicza historii, bezpieczeństwa międzynarodowego oraz nauk wojskowych. Z perspektywy amerykańskiej poddano szczegółowej analizie zagadnienia: przemian w amerykańskiej wojskowości, bezpieczeństwa narodowego USA, konfliktów zbrojnych w Iraku (1990-1991, 2003-2008) oraz w Afganistanie (2001-2009). Bazą prac badawczych była rozległa amerykańska baza źródłowa, czasopisma, literatura oraz filmy dokumentalne. Uzupełnieniem omawianych zagadnień są liczne mapy, schematy organizacyjne oraz wykresy.Abstract (en)
In this work, the author analyzes the major conflicts involving United States armed forces around the turn of the 21st century (the Gulf War in 1990-1991, the current Iraq War from 2003-2009, and the war in Afghanistan from 2001-2009) and the issues associated with U.S. security in this same time period. The text portrays numerous issues surrounding American military science: the Revolution in Military Affairs from the 1970's through 2009; changes in U.S. security strategy; transformation in methods of conducting war; the U.S. Army's experience in counterinsurgency operations; the development and implementation of COIN doctrine; military operations in Iraq in 1991 (Desert Shield, Desert Thunder, Desert Sabre); combat operations in Iraq from 2003-2009; combat operations in Afghanistan from 2001-2009; presidential politics with regard to ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; characteristics of combatants on all sides; and losses suffered in these wars. The author strives to discuss conflict not only as a military phenomenon, or issue of intemational security, but from the perspective of the average soldier. Several dozen maps and graphs supplement the text.
